Do many of the people on this list actually go out and buy a CD by a new
artist, just from hearing one or two songs on a sampler CD? Would it be
enough to intrigue someone to attend a concert of someone they haven't
heard of except for the sampler cut?

I do. I bought a Pete Nelson album based on one song (Two Hearts) on a
Signature records sampler CD. I ran into a request for the sampler on
their Web site... free.
Another brilliant sampler was "Here We Are" by singers around Asheville,
NC. I wrote to several artists. When Anne Lalley had a CD she wrote me and
a check was in the mail asap. Her song Lullabye haunts me.
