For this version I'm experimenting with listing additions/modifications first. With the next revision, I'll incorporate them into the main list.
My thinking is that this will make it easier for repeat TIFL users to spot the changes.
Does this make TIFRL more or less useful? Let me know at jeremy@tcf.ua.edu.
Our favorite site is still Folkbook, which generously provides space for TIFRL. But we'd be remiss if we didn't plug the Web sites for All Things Acoustic and Alabama Public Radio, where TIFRL originates.
The following was compiled mostly from people responding to my requests for info on folk_music, rec.music.folk, FOLKDJ-L and FOLKTALK. Additional data were gleaned from folk publications: Dirty Linen, Sing Out!, and Crossroads (a trade publication for folk radio--acoustic@rtd.com; [520] 792-9891).
I requested information in the following format:
REGION: PROGRAM TITLE: PROGRAM HOST: RADIO STATION NAME (call letters): RADIO STATION FREQUENCY AND LOCATION: TIME/DAY BROADCAST: TYPE OF MUSIC FEATURED: ADDRESS (e-mail, Web, and standard post): COMMENTS (how cool is it?):
The responses I got were more free-form, however. Rather than regiment them into the form I arbitrarily devised, I've left them mostly in their original format. The comments regarding the programs are those of the contributors, not your humble collator.
The stations are clustered by regions, and alphabetically by state/province within regions--within individual states it gets a bit haphazard.
Regions:
Stations are separated by a line of hyphens; regions are separated by a line of asterisks. "International" refers to regions outside North America--in particular, Australia.

FLKRD-G TXT Canada, International
These seven files will be sent to you via regular e-mail channels. Be warned, though, some are BIG--over 1,000 lines (50k) each.
Folkbook is a Web site with all manner of cool acoustic/folk music stuff--including the Folk Radio List. It's main URL is
http://web.cgrg.ohio-state.edu/folkbook/
If you connect this way, work your way through the menus to find the Internet Folk Radio List.
Alternatively, you can go directly to:
http://web.cgrg.ohio-state.edu/folkbook/radio/folkradio.html
Listed alphabetically. In the next version, these modifications will be inserted into the appropriate regions below. (Minor changes of address are not included here.)
Is this a useful way of presenting new info? Let
jeremy@tcf.ua.edu know, as this is
something new with which the TIFRL staff is experimenting.

ADDRESS (e-mail, Web, standard post): bushmill@datanet.ab.ca (host)
COMMENTS: Canada's largest recording library! The Celtic Show is hosted
by an ex-patriate Scot and a veteran of Alberta's folk music scene, Andy
Donnelly. With his soft brogue and wicked sense of humour, Andy
entertains and educates his audience on the marvellous diversity of
musical styles that reflect the influence of the Celtic tradition.
Touring artists often drop by the studio to put on a live performance
and chat with the host. As Andy himself is fond of saying,
"it's a wee smash-up". Excellent, and only on CKUA, eh!

Music type=traditional to contemporary folk
Address=1700 S. Main Street, Goshen, IN 46526
Comment=A college radio station which features mostly
classical music and some alternative sounds late night. The
folk programs are a transition between the two. We tend to
air music on the contemporary/progressive side although the
program content is pretty much up to the individual show
host....I probably am more on the contemporary side for
sure. Programming began 1/1/95 and we hope to make it a
success.

COMMENTS (how cool is it?): I play a wide range of traditional music,
from Dock Boggs to Boiled in Lead. I include a lot of source performers,
both from 78s and field recordings, as well as revival musicians and
people pushing the stylistic edge. I play very little singer-songwriter
material; this program covers the songs and tunes that have gone through
the "folk process" and entered the tradition. The three defining
recordings for this year are the "Southern Journey" series of field
recordings, the Harry Smith "Anthology of American Folk Music" set of 78
reissues, and Deborah Holland's "The Panic is On".

NAME OF PARTICULAR SHOW: Blue Monday

TIME/DAY THE PROGRAM IS BROADCAST: Monday 9-12PM
TYPE OF MUSIC FEATURED: Blues from country to R&B
COMMENTS: We've been programming folk music since our inception in 1968,
with some minor interruptions. FM on Toast got started in morning drive time
about 18 years ago, and we've built a sizeable, and very supportive
listenership. We (folk programming) raise more than a third of our yearly
goal during listener fundraisers. We don't have required playlists. Shows
are programmed by the individual hosts, so each show has a definite
personality. Monday and Wednesday are very eclectic and adventurous.
Tuesday is all Celtic. Thursday is bluegrass and bluegrass-based. Friday
is more traditional. We also have a popular bluegrass show on Saturday
mornings from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The station also features a Blues show on
Monday evening, and a Women's Music show on Sunday. We host regular concerts
(these days mostly Celtic since no other venue realizes how popular this
music is live) and host a yearly fundraising concert/CD release called the
Folk Next Door. Folk Next Door features 12 - 15 acts recorded live in front
of an audience of 300 in May. The album is usually released in the fall.
Artists perform for free and the proceeds benefit the station. We're just
finishing production of Folk Next Door 6, which is entitled, "The Emperor of
Ice Cream." Some of the artists who have performed for Folk Next Door
include: Dar Williams, Richard Shindell, The Nields, Lucy Kaplansky,
Cordelia's Dad, Hugh Blumenfeld, Catie Curtis, Sloan Wainwright, Susan
McKeown and Chanting House, Ratsy, Salamander Crossing. We also do live
interviews with musicians who are passing through or playing in the area,
although getting up at 6 a.m. to sing is not always easy. Occasionally we do
phone interviews, remote recorded interviews, or in-studio, off-air
interviews for later airplay.

TYPE OF MUSIC FEATURED: British Isles & musically related areas.
Live recordings from festivals and concerts from 6 to 6:30
once each month.
COMMENTS: I think I'd take this over Thistle and Shamrock if
forced to choose.
PROGRAM TITLE: The Open Mike
PROGRAM HOSTS: Mara Brod
TIME/DAY BROADCAST: Saturdays 7AM-8AM
TYPE OF MUSIC FEATURED: Newer voices on the Boston scene, mostly
singer-songwriters, mostly from cassette albums, some live
recordings made at open mikes.
COMMENTS: One of the few places to hear from people who don't
have CDs yet.
PROGRAM TITLE: Off The Tracks
PROGRAM HOSTS: Dave Palmater
TIME/DAY BROADCAST: Saturdays 8AM-11AM
TYPE OF MUSIC FEATURED: Anything which doesn't fit anywhere else
in WUMB's format because it's "too old, too electric, or just
plain too weird." Lots of Richard Thompson, Bob Dylan, Fairport
Convention, etc.
PROGRAM TITLE: Acoustic Sunrise
PROGRAM HOSTS: Bob Cannon
TIME/DAY BROADCAST: Sundays 7AM-Noon
TYPE OF MUSIC FEATURED: Acoustic instrumental music.
PROGRAM TITLE: Circles In The Stream

PROGRAM TITLE: The Coffeehouse
PROGRAM HOSTS: various students
RADIO STATION NAME: WERS
RADIO STATION FREQUENCY AND LOCATION: 88.9 FM Boston, MA
TIME/DAY BROADCAST: Weekdays 5AM?-11AM
TYPE OF MUSIC FEATURED: Mostly features contemporary singer-
songwriters, but depends a great deal on the host's interests.
Live music and interviews most days at 10AM.
ADDRESS: WERS, Emerson College, 128 Beacon St, Boston MA 02215
A real mixed bag, depending on the host. Lots of mis-pronounced
names, awkward interviews, and other foul-ups, but some of the
DJs get good with practice.
PROGRAM TITLE: Live From Passim
PROGRAM HOSTS: various students
RADIO STATION NAME: WERS
TIME/DAY BROADCAST: Sundays 3PM-5PM excluding summers and Decembers
TYPE OF MUSIC FEATURED: Live broadcast from Passim in Cambridge.
COMMENTS: With 3 acts on each show, it's a great way to hear
artists at various stages in their careers. The pre-opener is
usually unknown to Boston audiences; the opener is usually just
beginning to get good coffeehouse gigs in the area, and the
featured performer could be a Bill Staines, Greg Brown, Bill
Morrissey, etc. Usually by the time the opener comes on, they've
worked out the technical bugs with the microphones, cables,
transmission, etc.

COMMENTS :
WBRS as a whole is dedicated to a programming philisophy on not
judging the music, just playing it. This means that all music that is
received gets airplay, and therefore shows are a unique mix of both
well known and unknown music. While being nonjudgmental means that
music which may not be very good (in whose opinion?) is played, it
also means that you have a better chance than anywhere else of
discovering the undiscovered. And the fact that WBRS does not avoid
any music means that you can listen without bias, to judge the music
for yourself. Although some shows have regular hosts, the nature of
the station and its programming is such that DJs may vary without
changing the nature of the shows significantly.

COMMENTS: In May 1994 WPSU *increased* its local folk programming to 14
hours per week. In summer and fall 1994 we expanded our signal to
cover a much larger portion of north-central Pennsylvania, an area that
previously had no access to public radio. Our potential audience
increased by a factor of five. (Cool!)

ADDRESS : 70 Old Boston Road, Pittston, PA 18640
COMMENTS : Depending on what you like and on what George
is playing at any given time, from "not particularly" to "very." The
program is thematically/stylistically segmented, not free-form. George,
who's been doing this for about 21 years, has generally excellent taste and
his presentation is usually very intelligent. He doesn't really know a lot
about folk music, though, and doesn't present it particularly well, and
there's no telling when folk'll be on unless you listen regularly. This is,
however, the ONLY presentation of folk for much of the coverage area.
George pays a lot of attention to SINGER-SONGWRITERS. Reasonable amount of
world music and blues, too, considering the program covers everything.
(Also lots and lots of progressive rock, techno-pop, etc., so you take your
chances.) George also does live in-studio concerts, "Home-Grown Music," as
part of Mixed Bag.
