House Concert -- Friday, June 26 at 8 pm
Maria Sangiolo and Jerry Bresee
Moore Music (In the House)
Rockville, MD

We'll be hosting a special Friday night concert June 26 featuring a very
special performer. Maria Sangiolo had impressed on CD with her "Follow
Your Own Road," but when we saw her for the first time last November at
NEFA, she instantly shot to the top of our house concert wish list. And
that was even before she released a dynamite third Signature Sounds CD,
"Blue Earth."

One of the treasures of the Boston music scene, Maria Sangiolo
(http://www.signature-sounds.com/mariasangiolo/) writes inspiring and
revealing songs. She also has a drop-dead-beautiful soprano voice that
has drawn comparisons with Judy Collins and that makes every song worth
hearing.

Maria also is the favorite of our 4-year-old, who's learned the words to
"Follow Your Own Road." Plus, this most likely will be Maria's last
DC-area show for some time since she is expecting her first child this
fall. (So, hey, half-price admission for all expectant mothers!)

Opening the show is Jerry Bresee
(http://www.megnet.com/sa/artists/jbresee/biogrfy.html), a three-time
Washington Area Music Award nominee from Northern Virginia. The
jazz-influenced sound on his "Skylight" CD really rocks. Well, jazzes, I
guess.

So, please join us June 26 for this FRIDAY show -- or tell a DC-area
friend. Doors will open at 7:30 for light refreshments; music starts at
8. The suggested donation is $9, with all money going to these fine
performers (and future offspring).

Subject: Need feedback: do you want posting/searching open dates on Musi-Cal?

I apologize for the rather broad reach of this message (folk_music,
folkvenu, folk_biz, blues-l, bgrass-l). I'm conducting a little survey and
want to reach as many interested parties as possible.

Musi-Cal has long supported posting and searching for open dates. The
difference between an open date and a regular date is the presence or
absence of special keyword ".open" in the list of keywords associated with
the event. The Musi-Cal search engine knows how to keep open dates separate
from the rest of the database. This was so easy to add that I took a
shortcut on the user interface and simply added ".open" to the list of
keywords in the search and posting forms.

This feature never a lot of use, and much of it seemed to be in error. I
gathered ample anecdotal evidence over a couple year period that suggested
people posting or looking for open mics thought that was the meaning of
".open". A couple months ago I asked on the folkvenu mailing list if there
was any interest in a somewhat more distinct (and less error-prone)
interface to open dates. I got no responses (not one), even though I saw my
message come back to me via the digest. Thinking there was no interest, I
then removed the ".open" keyword from the submission and search forms.

Today I got a message from a performer wondering what happened to the open
posting capability. I explained the past problems and how to post open
dates by email. Posting an open date will do little good at this point,
however, since it will be something akin to a tree falling in a forest with
nobody to hear it.

My questions for all you people are:

Do you want a place to post or search for open dates?

Is Musi-Cal the right place for it as far as you are concerned?

Is there a better place for this exchange of information between
performers and venues? (Maybe something already exists?)

I'm most interested in responses from the people I perceive to be the
heaviest users of this feature: performers and venues (and the people who
interface between them). I will work on an improved interface if I see
there is demand for it, but if I get few responses or largely negative
responses, I'll probably just let it die.

Please reply directly to me (skip@calendar.com), not to the individual lists
this appears in. Let me know "yea" or "nay" (or "buzz off" or anything else
you feel is appropriate), and also let me know what camp you fall into
(performer, booking, venue, audience member, whatever). I will present a
summary of the responses in the near future.

Thanks for your time,

Regarding the review of the Dar/Richard/Bruce show in Concord, Mass -- the
opening act was Maia Sharp, a wonderful performer from California. She is
the daughter of songwriter Randy Sharp, and has a great album called
"Hardly Glamour" The album is on Miles Copeland's label ARK 21 Records and
is definitely worth a listen, especially the opening track "I Need This To Be
Love," a sort of Bonny & Clyde love song. Maia does have a homepage at
www.maiasharp.com

Not affiliated, just a very big fan! We caught the Philadelphia show and
were extremely pleased to be able to hear Maia live. She's going places!
