samplers

My favorite discovery from a sampler was from the Leak's first issue - Sara K,
who now has 4 titles on Chesky. "Closer Than They Appear" was my primo stress
release disc for a solid year, although eventually it drove my wife crazy.
Follow-ups "Tell Me I'm Not Dreamin'" and "Play On Words" were wonderful also,
though the latest, "Hobo," isn't so strong. I wish more people knew about Sara
K. Deft, swooping vocals and really fresh lyrical style. 4 string guitar...
The Leak's first issue was brilliant, but after that it seemed to be one
angst-driven guy with an affected Southern accent because he couldn't really
sing, after another. Another artist I'd buy from a sampler cut is the Scottish
ballad singer and songwriter Sheena Wellington, on Dunkeld and Greentrax.
Oasis samplers are so long I never get around to listening. They're still on
the shelf, though... Sloan Wainwright had a track on one of them, and we did
get interest from a digital radio thing in the Southwest from that... so
somebody's listening, out there.
Putting samplers together from diverse artists is a challenge, especially
when they're picking their own tracks. It's fun when it works... Our samplers
brought Sam Pacetti together with an investor (who bought them from Chuck
Brodsky) for Sam's next project... nearly got one of Kat Eggleston's songs
performed by Mary Travers... have increased our mail order sales by 80%...
have helped one woman recover from breast cancer and another heal from her
boyfriend's death in a motorcycle accident...
Onward & upward with the arts,
