Dana Mase, "Through the Concrete and the Rocks" (Water)

The slight catch in Dana Mase's yearning voice is the sonic equivalent
of the sense of doubt that pervades her songs. Doubt is perhaps
unusual for such a spiritual-minded believer, but it's the strange
combination of uncertainty and faith that provides the tension in
Mase's work that keeps a listener coming back for more. Produced by
Steve Addabbo (Shawn Colvin, Suzanne Vega), the melodic folk-pop of
Mase's third album has occasionally haunting, rock-fueled edges and
bridges that land it solidly in contemporary LilithFair territory,
making her a good bet to be the next Paula Cole.
